Red Sox rolling, Rockies reeling after Game 3
The Boston Red Sox will be getting the brooms ready for Coors Field on Sunday.
A six-run explosion from Boston in the third inning built just enough of a lead for starter Daisuke Matsuzaka as the Red Sox moved one win away from winning the World Series with a 10-5 win over the Colorado Rockies in Game 3 in Denver on Saturday.

Colorado will now have to try and become the first of 23 teams to come back to win a World Series after trailing 3-0. Nineteen of those teams were swept.
“It looks like we’re in groundbreaking territory,” Colorado manager Clint Hurdle said. “We just have to go out and win Game Four.”
Matsuzaka allowed two earned runs over 5 1/3 innings on three hits with five strikeouts and three walks for Boston, which now sits just one win away from its second World Series sweep in four seasons.
“I thought that was the best life on his fastball in a long time,” Red Sox manager Terry Francona said about Matsuzaka. “I thought he pitched really well.”
But it was Matsuzaka at the plate that helped chase Colorado starter Josh Fogg from the game in the third. The right-handed pitcher hit a two-run single in the frame to help his own cause while third baseman Mike Lowell cashed in two more runs with a single.
Jacoby Ellsbury, who moved to the leadoff spot for Boston as the series shifted to a National League park, hit two doubles in the third, the second of which chased Fogg from the game. Fogg made way for reliever Franklin Morales after giving up six runs on 10 hits in just 2 2/3 innings.
Boston’s offensive explosion could have been even bigger, however. Ramirez was called out at the plate after left-fielder Matt Holliday threw home on a Jason Veritek single.
Ellsbury, who finished the night with four hits and two RBIs, wasn’t the only change to the Red Sox lineup. Without the designated hitter position in play at Coors Field, a hobbling David Ortiz was moved to first base in order to stay in the lineup, which resulted in Kevin Youkilis being benched.
Youkilis was subbed back in as a defensive replacement in the sixth inning.
The Rockies, who have been in a woeful offensive funk in the World Series, also mixed up their lineup in an effort to find a spark.
Usual leadoff hitter Willy Taveras was benched in favour of Cory Sullivan, who moved down to eighth. Kaz Matsui then moved into the leadoff spot and Troy Tulowitzki moved up from seventh to second.
Jonathan Papelbon retired Holliday with two runners aboard to end the eighth inning and retired the side in the ninth inning to close the game for Boston.
Red Sox erupt early
Both teams failed to capitalize on early opportunities to open the scoring.
Boston’s first two batters, Ellsbury and Dustin Pedroia, reached base on infield singles, but Ortiz struck out and Ramirez and Lowell each flied out to end the threat in the first.
Matsui led off the bottom half of the inning for Colorado with a single to right and advanced to second after J.D. Drew misplayed the ball. But after Tulowitzki struck out, Matsuzaka caught his former teammate Matsui in a rundown on a fielder’s choice from Holliday and tagged him out. Todd Helton then grounded into an inning-ending force play to keep the Rockies off the scoreboard.
But the Rockies chased Matsuzaka from the game in the bottom of the sixth, and began to rally. Brad Hawpe and Yorvit Torrealba each hit RBI singles off Javier Lopez. Pinch-hitter Ryan Spilborghs nearly added another two runs but his huge drive to centre off Mike Timlin was caught by Ellsbury at the wall.
Colorado was robbed of a run in the sixth as Red Sox shortstop Julio Lugo made a leaping catch to deny pinch-hitter Jeff Baker at least one RBI and end the threat.
The Rockies rally continued into the seventh. After Matsui and Tulowitzki reached base safely on singles, MVP candidate Holliday belted a three-run shot to centre that put the Rockies down just one run at 6-5.
Ellsbury continued his stellar night with his fourth hit of the night in the eighth inning. His bloop double down the right-field line in the eighth inning scored Lugo from second base and gave the Red Sox an 8-5 lead.
Pedroia padded that lead in the very next at bat, smacking a line drive to right field that scored Coco Crisp from second as well as Ellsbury to build the Boston cushion to 9-5.
“We got a little comfortable,” Ellsbury said. “It was big to respond after their big inning.”
Veritek added another run when his sacrifice fly in the ninth inning allowed Lowell to tag up from third to put the Red Sox up 10-5.
