Foster: Backing Robinson

Ben Foster has backed Paul Robinson to deal with the pressure if selected for England.

Tottenham goalkeeper Robinson has been criticised for his recent performances for club and country, and his place in the England side could be under threat from David James.

Foster feels that competition for places is healthy but has given his support to Robinson ahead of England’s Euro 2008 qualifiers against Estonia and Russia.

“Everything gets analysed in the minutest detail but that’s what comes with the job,” Foster told Sky Sports News.

“You’ve got to keep your chin up and deal with it.

“You don’t play for your country or play hundreds of games for your club without being a good goalkeeper.”

Loan option

Foster has admitted he would be keen on another loan move later in the season if he still has not broken into the Manchester United side.

Edwin van der Sar is firmly established as United’s first-choice goalkeeper, while Tomasz Kuszczak has come in for the last couple of games and looked assured.

Foster, who is currently recovering from a cruciate knee ligament injury, accepts that he may have a long wait but is eager to play in the meantime.

Having spent the last two seasons on loan at Watford, Foster believes one option would be another short-term spell elsewhere.

“Come the end of February I’d like to play a few games just to blow the cobwebs out,” he said.

“But we’ll see what happens, whether it’s a case of playing for the reserves or a little loan for a loan for a month or two.

“Just to get some games under my belt would be brilliant.”

Disarray

Foster concedes that he took some pleasure from Jose Mourinho’s departure from Chelsea, but has backed The Blues to bounce back.

He explained: “He was a massive figurehead to have leading their team and I think it did knock them back a bit.

“It is always good when an opposition team has a bit of disarray about them.

“They had a few iffy results but they look to be back on track.”
